What is a talent according to the Bible?
According to the Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament, whatever its exact value, in the New Testament a talent indicates a large sum of money. The Bible Exposition Commentary: New Testament says that this sum was maybe even as much as a million dollars in today's currency.
Traditionally, the parable of the talents has been seen as an exhortation to Jesus' disciples to use their God-given gifts in the service of God, and to take risks for the sake of the Kingdom of God. These gifts have been seen to include personal abilities ("talents" in the everyday sense), as well as personal wealth.
The things you enjoy doing, are good at, and make you feel accomplished and fulfilled—these are your God-given talents and abilities.

The term 'talent' refers to an inborn and special ability that someone has. Skill is an expertise that can be acquired by doing things over time, like learning how to play guitar or speaking multiple languages fluently- it's not something you're born with, but rather something learned through practice.
Using Your God-Given Talents to Serve Others
As the Bible reminds us in 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV), “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.”
In the New Testament period, the talent was a sum of money, not a coin; whereas in the Old Testament it was strictly a unit of weight. The New Testament talent was the equivalent of 6000 denarii. A denarius was a silver coin weighing 60 grains.
Natural talents are just that: “natural”! They can be attributed to the natural genetic material existing within all of us, passed down from generation to generation. Spiritual gifts, on the other hand, come directly from the Spirit of God; that's why they are called “gifts” in the first place!
They are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.
What is the purpose of talent?
Talent doesn't only mean individual high performers, it can also be people whose behaviour and characteristics are particularly influential in motivating and empowering their colleagues. Collaboration and social skills can be as important as intellectual calibre or productivity.
A Babylonian talent was 30.2 kg (66 lb 9 oz). Ancient Israel adopted the Babylonian weight talent, but later revised it. The heavy common talent, used in New Testament times, was 58.9 kg (129 lb 14 oz). A Roman talent (divided into 100 librae or pounds) was 11⁄3 Attic talents, approximately 32.3 kg (71 lb 3 oz).
There are three types of skills: functional, self-management and special knowledge. Functional skills are abilities or talents that are inherited at birth and developed through experience and learning. Examples are: making decisions, repairing machines or calculating taxes.
Talent is a set of unique abilities possessed by individuals. There are two types of talent found in an organization. They are unidimensional and multidimensional.

Making high-quality decisions based on limited information. Understanding others' perspectives and dealing effectively with different types of people. Setting goals, monitoring progress, and taking the initiative to improve your work. Generating novel solutions and creative ideas to solve problems.
God has given us various abilities so that we can work in different places. The more we practice our abilities at work, the better we become at them. We should pray to God to guide us in the kind of work we do so that we can expose and perfect our abilities.
The Parable of the Talents teaches that we work for the Master, not our own selfish purposes. The money that is given to the servants is not their own. The money they earn with the capital is not theirs to keep.
Talent is given to everyone not only for personal use, but to enrich the lives of others. Your special gift of talent is the only unique gift you can give for the benefit of others. Sharing treasure is a Christian need that shows gratitude to God for the material gifts bestowed to us.
The science of skill acquisition has been the focus of a number of recent studies and books. As it turns out, we are born with very few, if any, natural talents and skills. Excellence is borne not of any particular innate ability, but of practice.
Proverbs 22:29 – The bible says seest thou a man diligent or skillful in his business or profess-ion, he will serve before kings and he will not be found in the midst of mean men. There is nothing you can get done in life without knowing how well to do it.
Is a talent born or made?
In any profession, it is important to invest time and energy into capacity building and continuous skill development to reach excellence. Talent is not born; it can be cultivated with passion, motivation, patience and practice.
Talent is God gifted ability, whereas Skill is an ability in which you put your time and efforts to develop. Talent is often possessed by a limited number of people. On the other hand, any person can learn a particular skill, if he has the capacity, capability, and willingness.
Talents are not Gifts in that giving them away is not the only way to use them. They can be used for ourselves alone and not shared with others, if we so choose.
Is singing a skill or talent? Singing can be both a natural talent and a skill. Some people are born with a tone that is naturally pleasing, but a good singing voice can be learnt. The best singers are those who devote the most amount of time and hard work to their passion.
Talents Are Inherited / Gifts Are Received
This is perhaps the biggest and most important difference. Natural talents are those abilities inherited from one's parents and nurtured in the context of one's family.
