What insect makes manna?

The favored theory on what the Israelites called manna is the sap of a tamarisk tree. In Calabria and Sicily, Italian farmers cut the bark of the flowering ash (Fraxinus ornus) to get the dried sap, the only domesticated form of manna.
Origin. Manna is from Heaven, according to the Hebrew Bible and to Jesus in the New Testament, but the various identifications of manna are naturalistic.
But manna is more than a literary anachronism -- it actually exists today in Italy, in a small corner of the island of Sicily. It does not fall from the sky -- it drips from the ash tree. When exposed to the hot summer sun of Sicily, this Italian variety of maple syrup solidifies into white stalactites of spongy sugar.

What was manna made of in Exodus?
In Exodus, it's referred to as “like coriander seed, white,” with a taste “like wafers made with honey.” Numbers, on the other hand, likens the flavor to “fresh oil” and describes how the Israelites “ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it.”

The Insect's Role is As A Teaching Symbol
All those references to these tiny creatures were put there for a reason: to symbolize to all believers what to do and not to do as we try to better follow the teachings of the Lord.
"`All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper.
God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the land of Egypt to bring a plague of locusts. The locusts covered the face of the land and swallowed up every crop and all the fruits of the trees.

Earthly corn was harvested yearly but the corn of heaven (the manna) was gathered daily and, in picture, brought joy to heaven every day.
